The Gorilla Guardians of Bwindi, Uganda

Family Planning Services in Bwindi

Bwindi’s endangered mountain gorillas, their habitat and other wildlife are under major threat from rapid population growth, fueled in part by a lack of access to, and availability of, appropriate voluntary family planning. This project will support increased access to, and availability of, family planning, to meet the current high unmet demand, by equipping community volunteers with appropriate skills and tools to make family planning available in homes, enabling informed decision making. COVID-19 continues to pose a major threat to people and endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi, Uganda. Limited awareness and poor access to healthcare compound risk. Transmission of COVID-19 to the closely related mountain gorillas would be catastrophic for the species. We must protect both people and gorillas by urgently supporting 59 Village COVID-19 Taskforce committees to continue conducting home-based care, community surveillance and prevention awareness and continuing to test gorillas. Gorilla Conservation Coffee pays a premium of $0.50 per kilo above the market price to coffee farmers living next door to the gorillas around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Gorilla Conservation Coffee further supports the farmers through training in sustainable coffee farming and processing. This helps to improve the coffee quality and increase production yield.
